The Phantascope or, to give it its correct name, Phenakistoscope, and
sometimes called the Fantascope, was invented by the blind Belgian physicist
Joseph Plateau in 1832. Its dicovery was simultaneous with the invention
of the Stroboscope by the Austrian geologist S.von Stampfer. The two inventions
are, in fact the same device. The Phantascope is commonly recognised by
historians as being the first "moving picture" machine.
